The Golden Roof
One of Innsbruck’s most famous landmarks is the Golden Roof. This magnificent building in the heart of the old town was erected in the late 15th century and served as the imperial residence of Emperor Maximilian I. With its 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles, the Golden Roof is a unique monument and its museum offers an insight into the history of the city. In the old town itself, visitors will find narrow, cobbled streets lined with historic buildings, cafés and small shops, inviting them to stroll and linger. It is also the starting point for various city tours, as there are many other historic buildings, museums and squares in the immediate vicinity.
The Hofburg
Not far from the Golden Roof is the impressive Hofburg Palace. This former imperial palace dates back to the time of Empress Maria Theresa and impresses with its magnificent halls, including the famous Giant’s Hall. The Hofburg provides an insight into the life of the Austrian aristocracy and is an important testimony to Habsburg architecture.
Events such as classical concerts or other festivities, some of which are free to attend, are also regularly held in the Hofburg courtyard.
Ambras Castle
Ambras Castle is enthroned on a hill in the city and is a really nice excursion destination for young and old. Originally dating back to the Renaissance period, the castle now houses an important art collection as well as curious exhibits such as the armoury and the chamber of art and curiosities. The beautiful gardens of the castle also invite you to take a stroll and offer a marvellous view over Innsbruck. Here you will also come across one or two of the castle garden’s animals, such as the odd peacock, which – if you’re lucky – will try to impress you with its beautiful plumage. The hop-on hop-off tour also passes the castle.
The Bergisel ski jump
The modern ski jump, which is often the venue for international competitions, offers a breathtaking view of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains. A visit to the ski jump is not only worthwhile for winter sports fans, but also for those who want to enjoy the spectacular architecture and the magnificent view. There is also a panoramic restaurant at the top of the ski jump. You can reserve a table there for breakfast with a view.
The Alpine Zoo
Another highlight, especially for animal lovers and families, is the Alpine Zoo. This unique zoo is dedicated exclusively to alpine wildlife and offers a variety of animal species that are native to the Alps. From ibexes to bears and wolves – the Alpine Zoo allows visitors to experience the fascinating animal world of the mountains up close. The zoo is also picturesquely situated on a hillside and offers wonderful views of the city and the surrounding Alps. It can be reached either on foot, by bus line W or the Hungerburg railway.
The Nordkette
Innsbruck is also known for its proximity to nature. The J bus line or the Hungerburgbahn cable car will take you from the city centre up to the Nordkettenbahn cable car in just a few minutes, taking you into the mountain world of the Nordkette. This is one of the best ways to experience the mighty Alps, even if you are only in Innsbruck for a day.
With the right equipment, there are numerous hiking and skiing opportunities. Downhill enthusiasts can conquer one of the most difficult trails there. In summer and winter alike, the Nordkette offers a paradise for outdoor activities and an unforgettable experience in the midst of nature.
