A Christmas fairy tale in the Alpine city

Set against the impressive backdrop of Innsbruck, they enchant locals and visitors every year with their unique blend of tradition, romance and festive flair. With a total of six different markets spread out in and around the historic city centre, Innsbruck has a lot to offer during the Advent season.

History and romance

The Christmas market in Innsbruck’s old town is probably the best known and most popular in the city. Around 70 festively decorated stalls offer traditional handicrafts, Tyrolean specialities and Christmas gifts. You absolutely must try a Kiachl here! You can also rediscover some old stories and figures in the Märchengasse and Riesengasse.

Maria-Theresien-Straße with its more modern market follows on from the Old Town. The wide streets and twinkling trees of lights create an elegant atmosphere, in slight contrast to the traditional market in the old town. This is also a great place to ring in the New Year.

Family-friendly and versatile

The Christmas market on the Marktplatz is aimed specifically at families. Children and parents alike can enjoy the Christmas atmosphere here. A special attraction is the nostalgic carousel, fun for young and old. There is also a small theatre stage where plays are regularly performed for the young visitors among you.

Panoramic views, peace and quiet

The Christmas market on the Hungerburg is an insider tip for anyone who wants to leave the hustle and bustle of the city centre behind. It is located above Innsbruck and can be easily reached with the Nordkettenbahn railway or bus line J. From here you have a breathtaking view over the city and the surrounding mountains. A visit in the evening, when the lights of Innsbruck sparkle in the darkness, is particularly recommended.

The Christmas market at Bergisl, on the south side of the city, also offers a wonderful view over the city, just from the other side. It can be reached with tram line 6 or 1 and is a nice change if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Local and authentic

These markets are just the thing for anyone who wants to experience authentic Tyrolean Christmas markets away from the crowds of tourists.

The Wilten market is known for its cosy atmosphere and special culinary experiences. Here you can get a good insight into what the restaurants and small shops in the neighbourhood have to offer.

In St. Nikolaus, a charming neighbourhood on the north bank of the Inn, you can experience a special market with a local character. The stalls are traditionally decorated with great attention to detail.

Conclusion: a magical experience

Innsbruck’s Christmas markets are not only a feast for the senses, but also a celebration of Tyrolean traditions. From musical performances by local choirs to the traditional Krampus runs and St Nicholas and Christkindl parades, there are numerous events to make your visit unforgettable.

Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway for two, a family outing or a break from everyday life – Innsbruck at Christmas time enchants everyone.
